WHAT’S NEW · v2.2.1

More precise drag and drop.
Organize with confidence.

Full release notes

Stable v2.2.1 · Supports Apple Silicon and Intel

01 / DRAG AND DROP FIX

Organize your files.
Move without duplicates.

In list or icon view, drag an item from the current folder into a subfolder to move it. Dragging an item in from another folder makes a copy and preserves the original.

Moves can be undone. Drag items from different sources separately. The image shows the v2.2.0 interface.

02 / v2.2.0 PANE CONTROLS

Collapse for space.
Reopen where you left off.

Arrow buttons on both dividers collapse each pane. Reverse arrows remain at the window edges to reopen them at their previous widths, independently or together.

Drag to resize, double-click to reset, or use the toolbar controls. Collapsed rails reserve their own space without covering files or scrollbars.

Use the existing install command
03 / v2.2.0 ICON FIX

Change folders.
No yellow flash.

Lists and grids show the macOS folder icon from the first frame, removing the yellow placeholder flash while custom icons continue to load.

Finder integration, localized menus and new extraction folders remain available.

MAKE EVERYDAY TASKS A LITTLE EASIER

Beyond browsing.
Ready to get organized.

From caches and chat attachments to files on another device,
and the archives in your inbox. Keep everyday tasks together.

STORAGE CLEANUP

See what takes space.
Then decide.

Open Storage Cleanup at the bottom of the sidebar. General Cleanup brings together caches, logs, installers, large files, WeChat attachments and Baidu Netdisk downloads. Software Cleanup narrows the scope to one app.

  • Separate totals for scanned, candidate, filtered and selected files
  • Filter by app name, file type, filename or path
  • Nothing preselected: review, then confirm a move to Trash
  • Exclude folders; keep recent caches and logs by default

Running apps and protected data are skipped. Usage is an estimate; moving files to Trash does not immediately free disk space.

WECHAT ATTACHMENTS

Your WeChat files,
ready for a review.

Find WeChat attachments in General Cleanup, or choose Software Cleanup → WeChat to filter by account, month, type and size. Custom WeChat folders are also included in general scans.

  • See totals for all, filtered and selected attachments
  • Narrow results by account, month and source
  • Double-click to open, or locate the folder in a new tab
  • Review and confirm before moving files to Trash

Only local attachments are scanned; chat databases are not read or decrypted. Partial results are labeled at the scan limit, which you can raise to scan further.

ANDROID FILES

Connect your Android.
Bring its files along.

Connect a phone or tablet over USB, select File Transfer and browse its MTP shared storage in a familiar file list. Photos, downloads and documents, all within reach.

  • Connections update automatically; open devices from the sidebar
  • Upload and download files in either direction
  • Create, rename and copy; native moves require device support
  • Built-in video playback, previews and seeking

No USB debugging or ADB. Images and PDFs preview in-app; other documents use their default app. Both use read-only local copies, while videos stream into memory. Private-folder access, codecs and range reads depend on macOS and the device.

ARCHIVE PREVIEW & EXTRACTION

See the contents.
Then extract your files.

Handle ZIPX, RAR, 7Z, TAR and more in one window. Browse folders or search, then double-click a small file to open it in the default app, or press Space for Quick Look.

ZIP / ZIPXRAR / RAR57Z / TARZSTD / LZMACAB / ARJ / LZH
  • Folder and breadcrumb navigation; full paths in archive-wide search
  • Double-click to open in the default app; Space for Quick Look
  • Passwords, split archives, batch extraction and cancellation
  • Keep existing files and save conflicts separately

Creating a ZIP excludes .DS_Store, ._* and __MACOSX, while retaining .git, .env and other hidden files. Default-app opening requires a file smaller than 64 MiB; extract files at the limit or with unknown sizes first. Embedded previews allow up to 64 MiB, with a 512 MiB intermediate limit for compressed TAR. External copies are cleaned later and never written back. Algorithm variants depend on the engine.

SMALL DETAILS, EVERY DAY

Your usual habits.
No fresh start needed.

See all features
01 / KEEP FAVORITES CLOSE

Drag it to the sidebar. Done.

Drag folders into the sidebar or right-click to add favorites. The in-app picker supports paths and hidden folders; collapse the sidebar when your files need more room.

Favorites are shortcuts. The original folder stays where it is.
02 / KEEP YOUR TRAIN OF THOUGHT

Several folders. One window.

Each tab keeps its folder, history, sort order and selection. Open several folders from the picker or locate a file in a new tab. Reclaim reloadable data in idle tabs as needed.

Pin and restore tabs, or type directly into the path bar.

Find files with fewer detours

Use the native search dialog to choose a scope and combine name, type, size and date filters. Browse 15 categories, batch-rename files and find duplicates.

Make yourself at home

The app follows your system language, with a manual choice of Chinese or English. Dark mode follows macOS.

An easier way to stay current

Check for updates on launch, then choose to install, skip a version or be reminded later in a native dialog.

Your files stay on your Mac.

Scanning and file organization happen locally. Updates come from GitHub, where the source is open for you to inspect.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

A few things to know.

Have another question?
Let us know on GitHub ↗

Are WinFile and LeafFiles the same app?

Yes. WinFile is now LeafFiles. From v2.0.1, the app folder is LeafFiles.app. The Terminal command at the top of this page backs up and migrates WinFile.app while preserving favorites, settings and the update channel. In-app updates may keep the old folder name; quit and rerun the installer to migrate it. Some historical screenshots show the old name.

Is LeafFiles free? Which Macs does it support?

Yes. LeafFiles is free and open source under the MIT license. It requires macOS 13.0 or later, with one universal download for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The app supports Simplified Chinese and English.

What if macOS cannot verify the developer?

Install using the Terminal command at the top of this page. The script verifies the package checksum and app signature, keeps a backup and rolls back if installation fails. The app is not Apple-notarized; if macOS still warns about an unidentified developer, follow its instructions in System Settings → Privacy & Security to allow opening.View the Terminal install command ↑

Does cleanup delete files automatically? Can I undo it?

No. Scanning only lists candidates and selects nothing by default. Confirmed files are moved to Trash after identity and usage checks. Running apps, protected data and uncertain items are kept. General cleanup and other apps’ cache cleanup can be undone with ⌘Z in the current session. WeChat attachments can be recovered from Trash. Moving files to Trash does not immediately free disk space; usage figures are estimates.

Why are some apps missing from Software cleanup?

The list comes from readable cleanup folders on this Mac, rather than every installed app. Helper, updater and extension components are not listed separately. WeChat scans local attachments. Baidu Netdisk also supports actual download folders, with a saved custom location. Other apps are limited to identified caches and logs, preserving accounts, settings, databases and offline content. Use Refresh app list after new folders appear.

What if my Baidu Netdisk downloads are missing?

Open Storage Cleanup → Software Cleanup, select Baidu Netdisk and choose its actual download folder. Common locations are detected automatically, and custom folders are saved. General Cleanup uses that folder too. Only files downloaded to this Mac are scanned; review what you want to keep before confirming cleanup.

Can WeChat cleanup find every chat file? Does it delete chat history?

Only locally downloaded attachments and supported cache locations are scanned. Chat databases are not read or decrypted. Files that exist only on your phone or have not been downloaded to this Mac will not appear. You can add custom attachment folders; date filters use file modification times. Preview attachments before confirming a move to Trash.

How do I connect an Android device?

Unlock your phone or tablet, connect with a data-capable USB cable, select File Transfer and allow access if prompted. No USB debugging, ADB or extra tools; connection changes are detected automatically. The device controls visibility; Android/data and private app folders may be hidden. If another app is using the device, quit Preview, Photos, Image Capture or the transfer app completely. Closing a window may not release USB access; LeafFiles retries automatically.Read the connection guide ↗

How do Android images and PDFs open?

From 1.4.1, double-click or choose Open for Android images and PDFs to use LeafFiles’ Quick Look panel. Space previews them too. Files are verified and use reusable read-only local copies; edits are not sent back to the device. Download first to open or edit them in an external app.

This fix avoids automatically launching Preview and its camera importer, which can claim the USB interface used by MTP. An external camera-import or transfer app you open yourself can still claim the device. Quit the app holding access and LeafFiles recovers automatically.

Does opening an Android video download the entire file first?

No. The built-in player reads MTP byte ranges on demand into a shared video-data cache capped at 32 MiB, without saving a full video file. Closing or disconnecting cancels reads and frees the cache. This is not a total memory limit or a promise of zero operating-system swap writes. Unsupported codecs or devices report an error without a download fallback.

Other documents still need read-only local copies. The cache targets 2 GiB / seven days and is cleaned when preparing files; copies opened in the current session are retained for external apps and may exceed the target. Download explicitly for external players or unsupported formats. Manual downloads are never automatically deleted.

Which archives can I extract? Will existing files be overwritten?

Extract ZIP/ZIPX, RAR (including RAR5), 7Z, TAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH/LHA, CPIO, AR, DEB, RPM and XAR, plus GZip, BZip2, XZ, Zstandard, LZMA and Unix compress streams and TAR combinations. Passwords, volumes, batches and cancellation are supported. Extraction is staged and name conflicts get a separate output. Codec/encryption variants depend on the engine, so not every proprietary ZIPX codec is guaranteed. Packages are never installed. Archive creation remains ZIP.

Will ZIP archives include macOS metadata and hidden files?

From v2.0.3, new ZIPs exclude .DS_Store, ._* and __MACOSX at every level. Other hidden files such as .git, .env, .gitignore and .config, empty folders and symlinks are retained. This applies to folders, direct multi-selection and combined selections from different directories. Only archive contents are filtered; source files remain untouched. Selecting only metadata shows a clear message without creating an empty archive.

Can I preview an archive before extracting it?

Yes. Double-click a local archive, press Space or choose Preview archive to browse folders, breadcrumbs and search. Double-click a member or choose Open with default app; LeafFiles associations take priority over the macOS default. Direct opening requires a file smaller than 64 MiB. Files at the limit, unknown sizes and links prompt extraction first. Single-click selects; Space and View selected file retain embedded Quick Look. Extract All offers a destination picker; extracting selected members is not supported.

Listing ordinary archives does not extract files. Opening a selected member creates a read-only copy; edits are not saved to the archive. External copies survive closing the archive window and are reused in the same preview session. Later file opens reclaim older sessions using a seven-day / 512 MiB target. Files handed off during the current run stay protected, so the target is not a hard cap. Embedded preview copies are removed on close. Compressed TAR intermediates are limited to 512 MiB; listings to 100,000 entries / 32 MiB.

How do updates work?

From v1.2.0, LeafFiles checks for updates on launch. Install, skip a version or choose a reminder, or check manually in the app. Both update archives and the feed are verified with Ed25519 signatures. Upgrade older versions using the Terminal install command at the top of this page.
